What's the Best Age to Begin Waxing?
One question I get pretty regularly is, “When can my child get an eyebrow wax?”
I feel that this is absolutely a personal choice for all parents to make, like most parenting choices. There is no definitive answer, but I’d love to provide insight and my own personal opinion as a parent, along with some professional advice.
The first thing I’d like to make clear: waxing should be the child’s choice. I will never, under any circumstances, begin waxing on a child/teenager that is only there because their parents want them to be. I fully believe in bodily autonomy and teach this to my kids at home.
With that said, I have waxed as young as 11 years old. If your child is asking about waxing, open up a dialogue as to why. Are they being bullied? Do they see mom’s brows and want to be like mom? Finding the root cause of their desire to wax can better help you empathize and make your decision as to if they’re ready. I do specialize in cleaning the brows in a way in which they’ll still have a full, youthful look.
Ultimately, waxing can be a bit painful. Therefore, it’s important to make sure they understand they’ll have discomfort for a few minutes. A great way to prepare them for waxing is to have them use a gentle facial cleanser and a moisturizer that’s pH balanced and fragrance free. If they’re using any products for acneic or oily skin with active ingredients, switch to something gentler the week leading up to their reservation. Also, any topical prescription medications or antibiotics can cause skin lifting and is contraindicated for waxing.
If your child is interested in any body waxing, such as legs, underarms, or bikini line, the same advice generally applies. There are added benefits to waxing these areas, such as smoother skin, no razors used, and finer more thinned out hair as they get older.
Most of you know that I have three daughters. Though they’re all too young right now to wax, when they’re ready to and they’re asking to shave, we will be waxing instead if they’re interested. I’m here for you when your kids are ready.
